Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has promised that Chelsea will not stroll past the Latics on their way to the Premier League title this Sunday, and insists that Roberto Martinez's side have what it takes to spoil the Blues' title party "for the good of football everywhere". "We have beaten Chelsea once this season, plus Arsenal and Liverpool, so we know we are capable of giving any team a game on our day," Whelan said.

Ghana's World Cup preparations have suffered a huge setback with the news that a knee injury will prevent Chelsea star Michael Essien from playing in the finals in South Africa. The 27-year-old missed a large part of the recently-concluded season due to knee and ankle injuries during Ghana's African Nations Cup campaign and has hardly played any competitive football since December.
