Portugal's World Cup preparations got off to a miserable start as they were remarkably held to a goalless draw at home to African minnows Cape Verde. Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz selected a full-strength starting line-up with the likes of Ricardo Carvalho, Miguel Veloso, Nani, Deco, Liedson and Cristiano Ronaldo all named.

Paul Gascoigne has been appointed manager of non-league Garforth Town. The former England midfielder has described the task with the Evo Stik First Division North League club as "a big challenge". His previous management role, at Kettering ended after 39 days as the club owner, Imraan Ladak, sacked Gascoigne claiming he was drinking too much.

The semi-finals will see Arsenal facing Championship side Ipswich and West Ham taking on Birmingham City.These will be two-legged contests with the first leg being played around the 10th of January and the second leg around the 24th of January.

Championship side Ipswich pulled off an amazing Carling Cup run that took them all the way to the semi finals. Moreover, they managed to win the first leg at home against Arsenal and they go at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday with a 1-0 advantage. Arsenal will be looking to move to the final and end the silverware drought but Ipswich will fight hard to see their dream come true.

Arsenal beat Ipswich 3-0 in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi final and Wenger's men will meet either Birmingham or West Ham in the final. The last time they won the League Cup was in 1993 while the last pieces of silverware were brought to the club in 2005 when they won the FA Cup and the Premier League title.

A David vs Goliath encounter will take place at Old Trafford on Saturday as Premier League leaders Manchester United will meet Blue Square Premier side Crawley Town in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Manchester United are coming from a crucial 2-1 derby win against Manchester City but Crawley will surely give their best to earn the right to a replay or even pull off a stunning upset. Crawley Town are in second place in Blue Square Premier and their nickname is... "the Red Devils"!

That happened to Dorchester Town 38-year old player/manager Ashley Vickers who was shown a straight red card for hauling down a Borat impersonator who invaded the pitch during the Conference South clash at Havant & Waterlooville.
