Football (soccer) originated in the 1800's and has always been a popular sport but since the 1900's interest in football was increased greatly. This is mostly due to the 1994 FIFA World Cup being played in the US, giving Americans the chance to really experience the sport for the first time. This led to the Major League Soccer which not only gave Americans the chance to watch the sport but play it professionally for the first time. A woman's league also formed which really made soccer a popular sport.

Soccer has managed to become increasingly popular in the U.S. by the media coverage following the sport. Several U.S. TV and radio stations are dedicated to following the sport. They provide daily coverage of coming players, scores, upcoming matches and other information following the sport. Due to the television coverage of the 2006 FIFA match it attracted 16.9 American viewers.

Youth has also become more involved in the sport in recent years. There are many community clubs that offer soccer to young individuals. Many schools offer soccer teams for both male and females to participate in after school. In some places soccer has acted as a replacement for football. Soccer has also gained popularity with the arrival of David Beckham and Mia Hamm. It has given Major League Soccer a face and has increased the success of both men and women’s soccer leagues.

Although soccer is behind the 'Big Four", football, basketball, baseball and ice hockey, it has gained much popularity and shows much promise. The U.S. continues to promote both men and woman’s soccer leagues. U.S. soccer has gained millions of fans and players over the years. Professional leagues have become more popular and highly successful. Soccer is on its way to being one of the most popular American sports.
