Manchester United are the unquestioned kings of football in England and are among the elite of European football as well. Clubs such as Manchester United dominate year after year, decade after decade because the best footballers want to pull on the red home kit of United and step onto the field at Old Trafford. On a squad full of top level talent, it can be difficult to pinpoint the best player on the pitch, but it’s worth a shot.

Any discussion about the squad's best player should start at the back with goalie Edwin Van der Sar. He has been one of the most reliable goalkeepers in football since his arrival at Manchester United and helped lead the team to three straight Barclay's Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy with his steady play.

Captain Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic could also be considered the best players on United's squad. The central defensive pair are the lynchpin of United's stout defense year in and year out. Both players use their height and physical presence to help United dominate other teams' attacking players.

Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, and Paul Scholes are all worthy of consideration as United's best players, having devoted large chunks of their careers to the club and helped maintain the club's position in English football. Giggs has played his entire career with United and broke into the first team as a regular during the 1991/92 season, and remains a vital piece of the squad's midfield. Scholes has also played his entire career with United, making his breakthrough during the 1994/95 season and has since been a midfield force for the Red Devils. Gary Neville is also a one club man, having been with United his entire career. Neville is a onetime captain of the club and has been used throughout the midfield and defense during his career.

Arguably the squad's best player though has to be striker Wayne Rooney. After making his professional debut with Everton, Rooney transferred to United in 2004 and has become a force to be reckoned with. Rooney is deadly accurate in front of goal and possesses the power and speed to defeat any defence he comes up against. At a young age, just 24 years old, Rooney has become the focal point of United's offence and carries the aspirations of his club on his broad shoulders easily.
