Best Football Referee

| Jul 21st, 2010 | by EditorNow that the World Cup of Soccer is over there are some viewers still holding acrimonious words toward the center referees of several soccer matches that decided who moved on to play another day and who packed their bags and headed for the airport. Unless you have ever been on a monolithic center stage such as European Football and the World Cup where millions are watching not only the players, but the center referee and linespersons waiting for the opportunity to become obstreperous to the point of throwing a bowl of peanuts at the TV, you have absolutely no idea of the pressure involved.
There are many attributes that separate the best football (soccer) referees chosen to officiate an important soccer match from the average Joe officiating a college or high school game. In either case when a referee puts on that yellow, purple, red, black or blue shirt, tucks the red and yellow cards in his or her pocket, slips the whistle on their finger and sets the timing watch on their wrist there are two thoughts that usually pass quickly through their minds. Don't let your emotions get you in trouble and don't ever be the one who determines the outcome or winner of the match. The best football (soccer) officials usually have control of the first thought but the second one is much tougher.
To become a referee of the highest caliber one must be cognizant of many things. How to remain in control of the game at all times. Where to be on the field that presents the best view of the action. How to discipline players and where to stand on the field. How to always look at various match situations from three different perspectives. You, the referee, the players, and the coaches and spectators.
