Goodbye South Africa
world cup 2010
| Jul 12th, 2010 | by EditorThe 2010 World Cup did not start on June 11th 2010, the impossibilities started when in 2004 South Africa was chosen over Morocco and Egypt to host the first world cup on African soil. However on June 11th the heroics did begin with the beloved South African team, Bafana Bafana, tying central American power house Mexico 1-1. Rolling through the pool play rounds legendary teams fell, France and reigning World Cup Champions Italy, as the smallest nation to advance to the finals Slovakia fought their way into the Round of 16. Fans also witnessed one of the worst loses in World Cup history as North Korea was defeated by Portugal 7-0.
Going into the Round of 16 it was anyone's game, Africa's last hope Ghana beat the United States in a extra time nail bitter. While teams like Brazil, Argentina, and Germany trounced their opponents leaving no question they were the top teams in the world. Spain struggled through to the Round of 8 playing a tough and talent Portugal side.
During the Round of 8 we saw Germany's superior technical and tactical skill easily beat high seeded Argentina. Spain topped the Paraguayans and World Cup favorite Brazil was the first team to crumble before our eyes, getting knocked out by men in orange, Netherlands. Africa's hopes were dashed as Ghana lost, in penalty kicks, to a strong Uruguayan side, after Ghana missed penalty kick in the last minute of extra time. In the semi-finals we saw Spain stun the young and talented Germans with a 1-0 victory and Netherlands were able to hold off the feisty Uruguayans who scored a goal in extra time and almost put away another before the end of the game. Soaked in Port Elizabeth, the third place game was sloppy, with Germany defeating Uruguay.
The FIFA 2010 World Cup Finals took place in the magnificent Soccercity Stadium in Johannesburg, after a scoreless regulation Spain scored a fantastic volley securing the 1-0 victory over the Netherlands.
