France and South Africa have both faced some unfortunate obstacles in this World Cup. If the Mexico vs Uruguay match ends in a tie, then the winner of the France vs South Africa match could advance.

South Africa has had a better tournament so far; they tied the game against Mexico, 1-1. Their goal came from Siphiwe Tshabalaa, and the hosting team almost had a win until Mexico scored in the final minutes to tie the match. In their second match against Uruguay, however, they lost 0-3, and they lost their goal keeper Itumeleng Khune to a red card. Another star mid-fielder, Kagisho Dikgucoi, will miss the match against France due to a second yellow card.

France, however, came into the tournament with much higher hopes and expectations, as they placed second in the 2006 World Cup. Their performance has been a disaster so far, starting with a tie with the lower ranked Uruguay squad. Their humiliation, however, increased with a 0-2 loss to Mexico in the second match.

They have been in the headlines as of late for their antics outside the game. It started with them being the only team to formally complain about the vuvuzela noise during the games. At Sunday's scheduled practice, the team refused to field because of the expulsion of Nicolas Anelka from the team. The lead athletic director of the team also quit in a very public display captured by camera.

This should have been France's bracket for the taking. They are the better team. The upcoming game against South Africa is their only chance to redeem any respect, as Florent Malouda said, “We're not going out of this tournament without winning a match”. However, underdogs South Africa have heart, and teamwork, on their side. The way France has broken down, it looks like a win for South Africa.
