A great goalkeeper is a key player on any successful football club. He is the last barrier between an attacking player and the goal. Anticipation, athleticism, and sacrificing are some of the most important attributes for any GK. Skilled goalkeepers don't wait for a one on one situation, but rather actively try to intercept and deflect balls such as cross passes. Part of the job also includes having great communication with the team's defenders.

When talking about today's best goalkeepers in the world, some players that come to mind are Iker Casillas, Gianluigi Buffon, Edwin Van Der Sar, Petr Cech and Julio Cesar. Each of these goalkeepers has contributed to his team's tremendous success. Additionally, they have all won individual awards and titles.

Spanish Goalkeeper Iker Casillas has spent his entire career in the Spanish La Liga. Over the course of 11 years since 1999, he was a key ingredient in Real Madrid's four league titles and three UEFA Champions League championships. Additonally, Casillas helped the Spanish national team win the 2008 UEFA European Championships, where he conceded only 2 goals.

Italian Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon's best accomplishment is helping Italy win the 2006 World Cup. He has been crowned as the best goalkeeper of Serie A a total of nine times. Buffon has even been recognized as one of the best European Footballers of The Year.

Edwin van der Sar has become a popular Goalkeeper among Dutch, Italian, and English Fans. Playing for top clubs such as Ajax, Juventus, and Manchester United, he has been part of multiple league titles and UEFA Champions League trophies. He also holds the record for the most caps for the Dutch national team, with a total of 130 appearances.

Petr Cech has proved himself as one of the best goalkeepers only in recent times. Since joining Chelsea F.C., Cech has helped his team win multiple league titles and domestic English cups. Cech holds an impressive record of clean sheets, as he didn't allow any goals in more than half of the games of every season with Chelsea. Cech also showed the ultimate sacrifice of a Goalkeeper, when he received a serious head injury while saving a ball in 2006.

Brazilian veteran Goalkeeper Julio Cesar recently achieved his best accomplishment by leading Inter Milan to the 2009-2019 UEFA Champions League title.
