The most internationally televised and eagerly anticipated sporting event is about to kickoff as the 2010 World Cup, hosted by South Africa, gets underway on Friday, June 11. The eyes of the world will turn to South Africa as some of the best football teams decent on the continent to battle for the biggest trophy in sports.

The 2010 World Cup will be on the most historically significant World Cups ever. South Africa will become the first nation on the African continent to ever host the World Cup, and on top of that Africa will be represented by a record number of nations. Six African nations will participate in the 2010 World Cup including Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and the host South Africans. Increasing the significance for African is the fact that nations like Cameroon and Ivory Coast are even favored to make deep runs.

Of course the usual suspects will be in attendance as powerhouses like Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain will be in South Africa. Five time World Cup champions Brazil, behind the play of Kaka, are heavily favored to win the tournament. Defending Euro 2008 champions Spain are also favored to win the tournament with many believing the Spaniards will meet Brazil in the final. England, powered by Premier League stars Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, and Steven Gerrard are poised to make a deep run with their best squad in recent memory. Italy return to defend their 2006 title with their squad mostly intact from that run while Germany and France have the ability to mount a serious run as well. Perhaps the world's best footballer, Lionel Messi, brings his Argentina squad to South Africa with legendary 1986 World Cup winner Diego Maradona on the bench to guide the team. Cristiano Ronaldo bears the expectations of all of Portugal on his shoulders as he will try and dazzle the world and carry Portugal deep into the World Cup.

The 2010 World Cup is poised to be one of the best in recent memory. The talent pool runs deep and though there are clear cut favorites in Brazil and Spain, it has been proven in recent months that both sides can be beaten. Don't miss a moment of the action from South Africa!
